Self-lensing of a Singular Isothermal Sphere
Many astrophysical systems can be approximated as isothermal spheres. In an isothermal sphere, the “foreground” objects can act as lenses on “background” objects in the same distribution. We study gravitational lensing by a singular isothermal sphere analytically. Our results may have interesting applications. PACS numbers: 98.62.Sb, 95.30.Sf Typeset using REVTEX 1
متن کاملGravitational lensing by the truncated isothermal sphere model for cosmological halos. I. Individual lens properties
The gravitational lensing properties of cosmological halos depend upon the mass distribution within each halo. The description of halos as nonsingular, truncated isothermal spheres, a particular solution of the isothermal Lane-Emden equation (suitably modified for Λ 6= 0), has proved to be a useful approximation for the halos which form from realistic initial conditions in a CDM universe. We de...
متن کاملAn Analytic Approximation to the Isothermal Sphere
We present a useful analytic approximation to the solution of the Lane-Emden equation for infinite polytropic index the isothermal sphere. The optimized expression obtained for the density profile can be accurate to within 0.04% within 5 core-radii and to 0.1% within 10 core-radii.

Networks of particles connected by springs model many condensed-matter systems, from colloids interacting with a short-range potential and complex fluids near jamming, to self-assembled lattices and various metamaterials. Under small thermal fluctuations the vibrational entropy of a ground state is given by the harmonic approximation if it has no zero-frequency vibrational modes, yet such singu...
متن کاملTranscendental Harmonic Mappings and Gravitational Lensing by Isothermal Galaxies
Using the Schwarz function of an ellipse, it was recently shown that galaxies with density constant on confocal ellipses can produce at most four “bright” images of a single source. The more physically interesting example of an isothermal galaxy has density that is constant on homothetic ellipses. In that case bright images can be seen to correspond to zeros of a certain transcendental harmonic...
